These are my top 5 anti-aging and skin clearing secrets that you need to start NOW!
Here are 5 skin care secrets that you need to incorporate in your routine now to get younger, and more youthful skin at home. If you get medical aesthetic treatments, you can use these tips to compliment your treatments and skincare products. If you don’t invest in your skin and incorporate good habits that you follow at home, aesthetic treatments will not work as well they should. These tips are some that I personally use on a daily basis and I can tell you now they WORK! I used to have acne since I was a teenager and it went over into my 20’s as well. So I always took the initiative to try new products and take extra care of my skin from a very early age. Now thankfully, I have clear skin and no more acne, even during that time of the month.
I challenge you to try these tips out for the next month and see the difference it makes on your skin.
Sunscreen/SPF 30 or Higher
This is the number one secret to maintain youthful facial skin. You need to find an SPF that is suitable for your skin type. I recommend using an SPF 30 or higher on a daily basis, rain or shine. A lot of people think that SPF should only be worn if you are going outside, but the reality is that even if it is a cloudy day, the harmful rays of the sun can still damage your skin. UVA/UVB rays can cause discolouration, sun spots, increased freckles, brown spots, wrinkles and more. Using SPF helps to prevent premature aging from the sun and ensures that your skin is not getting burned. The best thing you can do is start this step while you are young and it should be the last step applied over your serums, toners and moisturizers. There are two types of sunscreens available on the market, which are physical and chemical sunscreens. Make sure you do your research and invest in a good sunscreen that you will reach for every day. One of my favourite and easy ways to apply sunscreen is to go for multi-purpose products like the Skinbetter Tone Smart compact.
Drink A LOT of water
This goes without saying since over 75% of our body is composed of water. Water is important for overall hydration of the skin and hair and is one of the easiest things you can start doing right now to improve the look of your skin. Plus, you will notice a smoother, more hydrated and plump look to your skin. This is important for minimizing the look of existing wrinkles as well as preventing premature aging of the skin. Not to mention that consuming tons of water also has so many benefits for your organs and overall maintenance of your health and body. Sugar filled drinks and sodas can cause acne, dry patches and other issues that show up on your skin. Replacing these drinks with water will help flush out toxins and impurities from your body and will even help you maintain a healthy body weight. If you have trouble drinking plain water, you can always flavour it with cucumber, lemon or even other fruit! I keep an extra large water bottle with me to ensure that I see how much water I need to drink for the day.
Use Clean Skincare Products
This is a big one that took me a long time to figure out for myself. With so many beauty products available in the market and in all different price ranges, it can be really hard to decipher what products are good for your skin and which are not. Generally speaking, clean beauty products are those without excessive chemicals like phthalates, BHT, colours/dyes, mineral oil, silicones, and even scents. These chemicals often react with the skin barrier and cause acne, clogged pores and even premature aging. I will do a post on clean beauty in the near future, but always check the ingredient labels on your products for these ingredients. As with food, the more ingredients a product has in it, chances are there are probably some that are not so good for you. A lot of stores like Sephora, for example, usually have clean beauty products that they approve to be clean with a seal on it. So be sure to check that out, as well as brand websites for details about their product ingredients. Biossance and the Ordinary are two of my favourite skin care brands. My top medical grade skincare is by Skinbetter Science (link in header).
Get Some Exercise
I know this tip is easier said than done for some, but there are small changes that you can make right away that will start making a huge difference in your skin. Diet and exercise are key in creating beauty. Exercise is super important not only for weight loss, but also to increase circulation of oxygen in your whole body to deliver essential nutrients and antioxidants. It also helps to balance insulin levels and helps to reduce stress by creating endorphins which help you boost your overall mood. It helps you sweat out impurities from the body which directly help to clear your skin. So if there is one thing you take away from these tips, make sure you try and get in some exercise daily!
Eat and Drink your Greens
Leafy greens and vegetables are super high in vitamins and antioxidants which have a great impact on the quality and integrity of your skin and hair. The reality is though many people do not like to consume greens with every meal. So one trick to increase your greens intake is to drink a powdered green supplement in your daily routine. I love the Superfoods Greens, which I have listed below. Be sure to consult your doctor before you take any supplements and never take these supplements if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Secondly, I use pre-washed greens and blend them into my smoothie or just throw a handful into different dishes.
You can shop some of my favourite products that I like to incorporate into my daily routine.
By eating clean and incorporating these tricks, I am able to maintain healthy, glowing and clear skin.
