This past weekend, I attended the Canadian Aesthetics Expo 2022 in Toronto. World renowned dermatologists, plastic surgeons and injectors came together on the stage to provide in depth talks on different topics in aesthetics and injectables.
I learned an incredible amount about the latest in anti-aging treatments available on the market to help reverse aging and add beautification where required.
A common theme during the expo amongst all of the speakers was about getting the best of results from your aesthetic providers and for the clients to be able to enjoy and maintain the results long-term at home.
One particular speaker I was very excited to meet and hear from was Dr. Anthony Youn. He has an incredible 8 million followers on Tik Tok and a busy plastic surgery and aesthetics clinic in Detroit. Not only has he been featured on many talk shows and media outlets, but he also creates content that is both entertaining and educational for his followers. He spoke about Holistic Plastic Surgery, and highlighted a very wholesome approach to anti-aging. Dr. Youn says that he has come up with an anti-aging plan that can actually help to reverse aging in everyone who implements it and make you feel beautiful from the inside out. So let’s get right into Dr. Youn’s Holistic Plastic Surgery.

Consume an Anti-Aging Diet and Exercise Daily
Dr. Youn recommends that everyone consume anti-inflammatory foods in order to decrease aging at the core of the body and help to combat skin issues. He highlights that there are many studies to show that the gut microbiome is integral to controlling many aspects of skin health. An affected Gut-Skin Axis or imbalanced gut microbiome can cause inflammatory skin disorders, such as rosacea, ectopic dermatitis, and even acne. Along with daily exercise and movement, eating a variety of colourful, anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables and reducing intake of processed foods can help to keep the gut microbiome healthy.
Intermittent Fasting with Autophagy Promotion
There are countless studies that now prove that intermittent fasting has had a profound impact to reduce blood sugar and promote weight loss. Dr. Youn says that intermittent fasting is important because during the time that your body is in a fasting state, there is evidence to support that your cells actually renew themselves as well. Autophagy is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. This process is shown to reduce cancer and chronic diseases in the body. Naturally this process also leads to better skin health.
Supplement Intake
There are a few key supplements that Dr. Youn recommends taking, as part of an anti-aging and healthy skin routine. The first is a Multivitamin with Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Niacinamide. Studies show that people who have a higher intake of vitamin C have less wrinkles and dry skin as compared to those who don’t. Vitamin C is an essential building block of collagen and a photoprotectant. Vitamin D and Niacinamide can help to protect the skin from UV radiation and cell damage.
Dr Youn also recommends taking a Fish Oil or Omega 3 Fatty Acid supplement daily. Omegas are anti-inflammatory and provide healthy fats for your body and brain. People who consumed more omegas had better skin integrity with less dryness.
The next thing that Dr. Youn recommends taking, is a probiotic. Specifically, it should have 5-15 billion CFU. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that can improve your gut health and digestion. You can also get healthy probiotics from fermented foods, however taking a supplement can help you get the right amount of probiotics you require.
One controversial supplement that Dr. Youn spoke about was collagen powders. Collagen supplements have blown up on the market in recent years with every company claiming that their supplement powder is the best. The truth is that if the powder is not made properly, it won’t absorb into the body and provide the benefits that it is supposed to. However, Dr. Youn recommends taking a good quality hydrolyzed collagen powder which absorbs better and will help improve skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.
Set up a Simple Skincare Routine
This step is no secret and one that I completely stand by. Dr. Youn recommends setting up a simple skincare routine that you can stick to on a daily basis and that contains all of the essential treatments that you require to maintain your beauty at home.
In the morning, start off with a gentle cleanser, followed by an antioxidant serum and a sunscreen of spf 30 or higher. We recommend using the First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Face Cleanser and then the Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum right after. It’s best to follow that up with a good moisturizer like the Biossance Squalene + Omega Repair Cream and then you can top it off with a sunscreen like the SUPERGOOP! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40.
In the evening, Dr. Youn recommends adding in a retinol moisturizer after you cleanse and then a brightening cream on top if you want an extra pop of skincare benefits. He recommends adding in an exfoliator 2-3 times per week. We recommend using the DR. DENNIS GROSS Advanced Retinol + Ferulic Intense Wrinkle Cream. To exfoliate, we recommend using a lactic acid like the SUNDAY RILEY Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment. We also like the DERMALOGICA Daily Microfoliant since it isn’t harsh on the skin.
Get Non-invasive and Minimally Invasive Treatments
In office treatments a few times per year can be really beneficial to helping build and maintain your beauty. Botox can be strategically placed to reduce wrinkle formation and stop creasing. Dermal fillers can be used in small amounts to help add in lost volume and enhance certain features. There are also many other treatments available like PRP, biostimulators, skin boosters and laser treatments. Radiofrequency microneedling is also a great option for collagen stimulation and skin tightening. Treatments like these can help your physical signs of aging on the skin come slower and help you maintain a refreshed appearance long-term.
Get Actual Plastic Surgery as a LAST RESORT
Finally, plastic surgery has its place for many people, however Dr. Youn says to get it as a last resort if there is nothing else that works. For optimal results, it’s best to try and approach your beauty regime through a holistic lens and try to adjust your lifestyle and what you are doing at home. With time, we have learned so much about the science of aging and what causes premature aging at the root. We know that doing most of the things listed above can help keep your body healthy and reduce inflammation, which is the main cause of so many health issues that lead to premature aging. Always consult with a trained health professional that you trust before opting for surgery or any cosmetic treatments.
