Is a half syringe of lip filler enough?
This seems to be one of the top questions in my practice as a nurse injector. Some people want a full syringe, while others want Russian lip technique and some are asking for a half syringe. You may also fall into the other category, which is confused.
So this leads us to the question, is a half syringe of lip filler really enough?
Well, the simple answer is – maybe.
Let’s explore this a little further.
One of the main things that your injector will do during your initial consultation or visit is to assess your face and history.
Your injector should be a trained nurse or doctor that knows what to look for and assess before deciding how much filler to dose you with. Injectors have the knowledge, experience, and training to dose you correctly. There are many things that we look for when dosing you for the amount of filler you require, including the surface area and if you have had any previous filler before and when.
Therefore, you should never decide the amount of filler you would like before coming into the appointment.
You may need half or a full, but let your injector decide! Otherwise, you may be disappointed with the results, especially if it is your first time getting lip filler.
The reality is that we use our lips a lot and move them around to eat and communicate. Therefore, because of this, filler dissolves at a faster rate from the mouth area than other areas of the face.
Typically, if it is your first time getting lip filler, a full syringe is usually recommended so that after it settles in 2 weeks time it will still look plump. This usually lasts between 6-8 months depending on your body’s metabolism.
Half a syringe on the other hand usually goes down very quickly. After a couple of weeks, the initial swelling goes down and healing happens as it integrates with your lip’s natural hyaluronic acid. And you can guess, if a full syringe lasts 6-8 months, then a half will last a max of 2-4 months. This will cost you more money to maintain as well in the long run, not to mention that you have to keep going through the pain and healing process of getting your lips done so frequently.
Although a “full syringe” may seem intimidating for some, it really does not accumulate to a lot of product, and you definitely will not have duck lips after 1 syringe! In my practice, I have noticed that lips look better as they are built up over time. You can achieve a natural look by starting off with one syringe and maintaining it with small amounts of touch ups over time.
The point is, trust your injector and let them decide on the amount to dose you with so that you can get your desired look. Know that 1 syringe won’t hurt you and it will dissolve over time. If you like the look you have received, talk to your injector to schedule another appointment for a top up. Ultimately, you want to make sure that you get your money’s worth, so make sure you always communicate and ask questions.
