1. Come to your appointment with a clean face and avoid makeup after your treatment

When getting any sort of cosmetic injectable treatment, you should always come with a bare face to your appointment. This prevents any dirt and debris from going into your skin and minimizes the risk of infection or skin irritation. Of course if you are coming from somewhere and need your makeup removed, that is an option that is available, but make sure you communicate this with your injector. The same holds true for after your treatment. You want to avoid putting makeup on top of the injection sites so you are minimizing any risks to the treatment area.

2. Do not smoke or drink within 24-48 hours before AND after your botox treatment

Excessive smoking and drinking are not good for your skin or health, so try to keep these activities at a minimum, especially if you are concerned about wrinkles. Smoking and drinking cause inflammation in the body, and can be causes for increased swelling and bruising when getting injectables.

3. Do not lay down or bend down for 4 hours post-treatment

Once you get treated, you must stay upright for at least 4 hours. This is to ensure that the product injected does not seep into other muscles where we do not want it. This is one of the key ways to minimize any post-treatment issues like lid ptosis.

4. Stay out of the sun and avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours

After the treatment you want to make sure that you avoid the sun so that you avoid overheating the treatment area. You also do not want to exercise for a day so that you do not excessively sweat. Every post care instruction is given so that the botox treatment absorbs properly into the muscles and you avoid any complications.

5. Avoid using Retinol 1 week post treatment

Retinol is a strong skin treatment which can be harsh on the skin and cause excessive irritation after botox. It is generally best to avoid retinol and any other strong skin treatments for at least 1 week so that you are manipulating the treatment area and avoiding any irritation to the skin. Of course, retinols are a great at home treatment which can help to really minimize wrinkles and smooth the skin. So go ahead and use it again after a week of getting your botox treatment.

6. Do not chase your wrinkles

Botox treatment is meant to minimize your wrinkles, not eliminate them. You should wait at least 14 days to see the full results of the treatment and only go in for a touch up if there is spocking or a spot that the treatment did not fully take to. The touch up is not meant to be an addition of more than a couple of units. In most cases, the muscles will not freeze completely, rather their movement will be softened which is ultimately what leads to less wrinkling of the skin.

7. Start before your wrinkles become deep

A generally good rule of thumb is to start getting botox treatment when you start noticing your wrinkles are not exactly going away when you are not forming expressions. It is a good idea to do botox as a preventative measure at this time so that your wrinkles do not become too much deeper. If you start at a later age when you already have the wrinkles etched into your skin, then botox treatment will not be as effective as it could be.
